With a mixture of experience and youth, and the return of Gary Gray to the Gravesend RFC shirt last night, see James Callaghan match report below:-

Friday evening saw Gravesend 2s host a strong and experienced Sevenoaks side in front of a well stocked home crowd. This was the home teams final game of the season and a chance to show off some of the up and coming Academy lads. Gravesend again fielded a very young yet motivated 15 with 8 lads running off the bench. Some of whom were having their first taste of senior rugby.

Gravesend started slow and immediately came under pressure in their own half. Sevenoaks worked hard through their forwards and continued to pile on pressure with some effective quick ball. However good line speed from Gary Gray, Noris Kanaharajah and Ben Kite made it difficult for the away team to release out wide. Some good line breaks by number 8 Tom Wilkinson saw Gravesend start to take control and show promise at times. Unfortunately some effective defence work at the breakdown saw Sevenoaks prevent Gravesend from capitalising from some good passages of play.

The second half saw Gs come out strong and immediately took the game to Sevenoaks. Wilko and Bucko utilised the bench well and introduced some of the Academy lads midway through the second half. Young George Bruce performed well at 10 under pressure and continued to steer Gravesend towards numerous scoring opportunities. This eventually developed into a good line break through some strong running from Joe Haffenden who eventually put some well earned points on the board for the home side.

Despite their determination, Gravesend were unable to turn momentum into points and saw the game close at 13-7 to the visitors. However, the game demonstrated great depth in the club, this being something that will only benefit the squad next season.

"I think we should be proud of our performance tonight. Sevenoaks are a very experienced and well drilled team however at times we really put their defence to the test and were unlucky not to come away with a win. The team will only go from strength to strength now, so roll on next season!"
