Hundreds of local youngsters get chance to give wheelchair sports a try

The Kent Community Foundation, based in Ashford have helped Gravesham's young people more than they know. A generous grant to Gravesend Dynamite has enabled the wheelchair section of the club to carry out a sustained project throughout the borough in many local schools including Gravesend Grammar School, Mayfield, St George's, NTC, Cecil Rd primary, St John's primary, Vigo primary school and Ifield special school.

Furthermore, the club have worked with disability groups such as Whizz-Kids and a group of youngsters who came over from Thurrock, Essex. The project has given so many young people the chance to have a try at wheelchair rugby (and some have even taken on the sport by joining the club!) but also enabled some of the existing young players at the club to develop their leadership skills by supporting the coach at sessions.

Further sessions are planned at other Gravesham schools including st John's secondary and many schools who have already had the project are queuing up for more.

Head teacher at Vigo, Roger Barber said, "This has been a marvellous project and given our pupils the chance to experience something totally new - big thanks to Gravesend Dynamite for offering us the chance to be involved"

Jason Owen, coach added, "We've really tried to make a difference to lots of young people in so many local schools but without the funding from the Kent Community Foundation, we wouldn't have been able to do this so big thanks must go to them"
