...in the race for the showers.

With Sevenoaks dropping out of the league several weeks ago,Saturday suddenly became a free week. With this in mind Ben Baker, the Gannets crippled captain arranged for Aylesfords thirds team to visit the banana pitch.

Unfortunately with this being a 'free week' several players had other things going on.Dan Grant for example decided to spend the weekend having a pedicure whilst Jon Sargent was off with the twos having his arse handed to him.Luckily the Gannets squad are jacks of all trades yet masters of none so raising 16 bodies wasn't going to be a problem even if it did consist of a front row of Big H in his first game for donkeys after injury, half of Martin Drobka and Sean who hadn't played in 8 years and never on the front row.

As for the game itself,it was the ultimate game of two halves. The first saw the Gannets bar the odd breakaway on top and camped in the Bulls half. The loss of Steve Wootton to his iffy hamstring (which allegedly is a direct result of him being Welsh) somewhat dulled the Gees attack as the speedy Bulls backs snuffed out any raids.

The Gannets had reason to be confident going into the second period but much like the bigger boys on the adjacent pitch,a collapse was on the cards.Sensible play and solid tacking made way for an utterly farcical show of comedic defending as Aylesford cut through the home defence with ease.Maybe it was the 'friendly' atmosphere, maybe it was players playing out of position or maybe they were simply bloody awful, who knows but before they knew it,it was 0-33 to the visitors.

Enter stage left Mr RH 'mayhem' Mayhew who in this instance fully lived up to his moniker.

With the Bulls hipster fullback heading downfield and straight into the loving arms of mopatop Martin Taylor,Mayhew appeared out of nowhere with a half arsed attempt at some sort of shoulder barge/tackle with express intent of sending him on a one way ticket to Hoxton.Unfortunately all he managed to do was redirect him into empty space and a score under the posts. That was it.Game over.Up until that moment the brave, ragtag Gannets were still in it but the game had gone.

Two things could be taken from this game.Firstly,it was a bit of exercise seeing as most of the Gannets very rarely make training and secondly, they had first dibs in the showers. So it wasn't all bad.

Until next time...
