A solid performance that was somewhat overshadowed by Mayhems garish footwear

After the cancellation of last weeks away trip to Medway due to a 'waterlogged pitch' this was the Gannets first league outing for over a month.

With the injury crisis currently affecting the first team leaving the seconds short, they drafted in the influential Mike Percival and Harry Redsell. They also took the not quite as influential Dan Grant.(We love you really,Dan xxx)

As the title alluded to,Mr Mayhews choice of footwear was quite frankly, horrendous.PInks and greens and purples combined to result in what could only be described as a Christmas present that he felt obliged to wear.

Anyway,onto the action.
The opening kickoff from the Gannets was fielded tentatively by the Wells defence with no one seeming to want to take responsibility for the ball. The Gees quickly seized upon the uncertainty, turning over the ball where a strong run and offload from Jamie Feighery found Tom Filmer who burst through the heart of the visitors defence to score under the posts after only 3 or so minutes of play.

Dan Bromley added the extras and soon after slotted a penalty in front of the posts for an early 10-0 lead.

Tunbridge Wells then settled down and got their game together, marching up the field with several quick phases of play but the Gees excellent defence held firm with Tom Filmer and Connor Watkins excelling. As has so often been the case this season, the Gannets huffed and puffed but couldn't trouble the imaginary scoreboard any further.

And it was much the same in the second half with the Gannets making good ground into TW territory only to be thwarted short of the line on several occasions and when they did cross the line, the ball was dropped (no names mentioned).

Finally, the breakthrough came after several phases inside the TW five and with the backs screaming for the massive overlap,Dan Bomley wriggled his way over the line next to the posts for a score which the Gannets dominance deserved.

A late surge inside the Gannets five was seen off and the ball was kicked into touch for a well deserved, solid but maybe unspectacular victory.

Talk before the game was about discipline and not overcommitting at breakdowns and this bore fruit with the relatively speaking (for the Gannets) low penalty count and shut out scoreline. No mean feat when half your team are old bastards that haven't played in ages against a younger, fitter and quicker team.

Next week it's Vigo away and if Medways pitch was waterlogged then the Gannets will be packing wellies and armbands for what is a heavy pitch at the best of times.

Until next time...
