Gannets lose to New Ash Green

After travelling with a strong looking side, thanks to help from the Swans after their games fell through, the Gannets should have been confident of getting their second win of the season over NAG but never really got into gear to properly challenge the home side.

Impetus was hard to come by for both sides with penalties being given all too regularly but New Ash Green made better use of their chances in Gravesend's half to score four tries to the Gannet's one.

While it might have been hard to see the reason behind some decisions made by the referee throughout the course of the game, the Gannets can have no complaints about the first of their two yellow cards at the start of the second half after Gareth Williams engaged in a minor scuffle with his opposite number. Gary Curran followed to the bin shortly afterwards meaning the game was played 13 v 14 for a while, further disrupting the games rhythm.

In trying circumstances with yet another combination in the centres the Gannets defended well all afternoon but ultimately were unable to build on good phases of play with the concession of penalties or the spilling of the ball. The penalty try awarded late in the second half was the result of good forward play which suggests there could have been a different result if the match was played again with Gravesend playing to their strengths and concentrating on staying the right side of the referee.

Post match talk turned to the inter club game scheduled for 17th March with team mates from today lining up for the Swans in opposition to the Gannets. There is also the match away to Swanley on 3rd March to focus on with the Gannets hoping for a chance to overturn the defeat at home earlier in the season.
