The Gannets travelled to Rochester to face an unbeaten Old Wills team with a squad thin on backs and second row meaning yet again, that players were having to slot into unfamiliar positions.
The game started fairly evenly with the big Gravesend pack taking the game to the Old Wills and the home backs giving a taste of things to come with some strong running.
But the floodgates opened after a speculative kick down field was fumbled by the Gravesend wing allowing allowing the Old Wills to seize the loose ball and score by the posts.
This was quickly followed up by a well worked move allowing their big fullback to canter through under the posts. The scoreboard was kept ticking over after that for a 45-0 halftime lead.
The G's came out with renewed vigour in the second period putting together some good drives only to be thwarted by the home defense. It wasn't until the final ten that the Willies youth and fitness finally took its toll with three further scores.
Final score,64-0 to the Willies.
Overall, you can't help but feel that the Gannets were the architects of their own downfall with some uncharacteristicly shocking tackling out there today.Something which will be worked this coming Wednesday I'm sure.
Hats off to the Old Wills though and i fully expect them to there or there about at the end of the season.
G's man of the match as selected by the oppo was Rich Mayhew,
I am reliably informed that he only won by a (big) nose and that was for nobbling their hooker.
All was not lost however as Rich won the drink off in the bar afterwards proving that our fabled fitness regime is good for something.
Until next time...
