Four tries from the G's were enough to see off Lordswood in an entertaining, see saw battle

To kick this report off I shall refer to us as 'the G's' rather than 'the Gannets' to acknowledge the contribution by the Swans and Moles players that have stepped up to help us in what has been a challenging season so far.Your efforts are valuable and much appreciated, especially today!

Our pre match warm up mostly consisted of 10 of us throwing (and dropping) a couple of flat balls around whilst watching Ben ring around to muster a front row so we could at least start the game with contested scrums. As it happened, the oppo had similar woes meaning we kicked off 15 mins late.

So as it transpired we started with a centre playing hooker,a winger playing flanker and a flanker playing second row.

An early line out on the G's 5 metre line led to some confusion amongst us,mainly due to the fact that we hadn't practised any line outs pre game, and Lords Capitalised by picking up the loose ball and scoring an unconverted try.

The G's play was all over the place in the early stages with dropped balls and wayward passes a plenty and it wasn't too much longer before Lords scored another next to the posts which the kicker made no mistake with.12-0 Lordswood.

This gave the G's the kick up the arse we needed and our game plan of getting the ball to our speedy backs started to pay dividends.A slashing run by James Kurszewski was quickly recycled by the forwards, the ball finding its way back across the field to Dean Barr who beat off some limp wristed tackles to score in the corner.

From the kickoff we again piled forward before momentum was halted by a yellow for Matt Clarke for tripping. If you ask me he was looking for it,hanging his foot back and all that. But we fought back and more great hands from the backs saw Dean Barr get robbed of the ball on the line, however Garrick Smith was on hand to steal the ball back and score the try.

Half time 12-10.

A Brian Rayner pen put the G's in front for the first time in the game early in the second half before the home teams pressure on the G's line resulted in another try, again unconverted.

Again the G's retook the lead with Dean Barr intercepting a loose pass inside our own 22 and running the length of the field to score under the posts.17-20.

A knee injury to Mitch resulted in scrums becoming uncontested and opened the game up even more with the Lords 8 making headway into the G's 22 on several occasions and it wasn't long before another try was scored and converted with under 10 minutes remaining.24-20.

Another darting run from Kurszewski, this time from inside his own 22 saw the G's down inside the Lords 5 and after several attempts,Ian Shuttlewood got his nut down and split 2 defenders to score under the posts with a minute left to play.24-27.

All that remained was for the G's to field the kickoff and see out the clock until Dean Barr again broke through but with an empty field in field of him, elected to sportingly (or maybe he was knackered) kick the ball into touch, thus ending the game.

It has to said that todays performance was,to a man, immense.Everyone gave 110% and left everything on the pitch.

Forwards.Playing against a physically larger pack, with most players playing well out of position,we held our own, drove them back on more than one occasion and defended the line like our lives depended on it.

Backs.Showed excellent hands with strong running, tackling and support play in rucks and mauls.

Man of the match? Everyone.

Be proud to be a G!

Until next time..

*update* Due to the threes match being pulled and despite us fielding not one third team player, the league has taken the win away from us and called the match a draw.Gutted to say the least.
