On another glorious day for rugby, if it doesn't rain, it pours!
#1 Mole, Gary Theobald, made his disappointment at the previous week's low Moley turnout via social media and text; urging the Mole brotherhood to make their backsides available for a match against what he and skipper Mick Terry had both been assured was a "genuine old boys team".
Well, there were two or three token silver haired chaps on display, most of the Moles have underpants older than the combined age of the Old Es backline!
Another afternoon of grit and determination ensued largely to contain the E's speed at the back and physicality at the breakdown. There were some glimmers of good forward play from the Moles particularly when scrummaging and mauling. Stuey Harrington had a good game at 10 and strong ball carrying from Toby, Oaf and Russ ensured that the game did not look by any means one-sided. Mole-of-the- Match was unanimously 50 year old granddad Brian Rayner at full back. A number of try saving tackles from Brian certainly helped to make the final score look more respectable.
Old Elthamanians 1s play in National League 2 South; a league above the Gravesend 1st XV. Allegedly, some their backline featured 2nd XV players. It wasn't difficult to believe this rumour!
This was simply a 'stitch up' of a fixture! But the Moles got on with it and as previously mentioned kept the score looking respectable. Proof once again that the Moles is something much much more than a just rugby team!
