Gs demonstrated strength in depth with a convincing all round performance at Dartfordians

Last week was a case of "Zac's the way to do it", this week, we proved we have strength in depth.

Dartford kicked off with both sides appearing a little nervous. A scrappy 5 minutes of play ensued with errors by both sides, before G's were given a penalty just inside the Dartford half. A quickly taken tap by Zac and a strong run, drawing the Dartford fullback before offloading to Tye, who run it home under the posts and subsequently converted. 0-7 Gs. Dartford managed to gather their own ball at the restart, a few missed tackles by Gs and some good Dartford pressure resulted in Dartford crossing the Gs try line in the corner and leaving a tricky kick for the extra points to tie the match. The kick fell short and after 8 minutes the score was 5-7. At the Gs restart, the boys played with more commitment in the tackles and rucks and began to apply pressure to Dartford within their own half. Ned made a great run, stopped on Darts 5m, isolated, Darts won the ball from the ruck and kicked into touch on the 22m line. Gs throw wasn't straight, and Darts were awarded the scrum. Although Darts won their scrum, good pressure from Gs forwards saw Gs turning over ball from a Darts maul. Quick hands out to Ben C and a powerful run before a well timed offload to Tye, who ran it home in the corner for Gs second try. With the conversion narrowly missed, Gs took a 5-12 lead after 13 minutes.

Twice in the next 5 minutes, Darts resilient defence managed to hold the ball up behind their line. From the second Gs scrum Darts, having won the ball against the head, elected to kick clear. The ball sailed straight into the hands of a waiting Ben C, who ran home from the 22m line, taking the score to 5-17. Tye converted making the score 5-19, 22 minutes into the 1st half. Darts early confidence and commitment disappeared and the last 8 minutes of the half saw 2 more Gs tries, one of which was converted. The 1st came from a lovely passage of quick passing with the ball ending in the hands of Ben D, who scored a well-deserved 1st try in the corner. The second came from a lovely run from Zac, again drawing the tackle from Darts fullback and releasing the ball to Tye, who touched it down for his third. At half time, a demoralised Darts side were behind 5-31.

3 minutes into the 2nd half, Gs were at it again! With the Darts fullback's confidence ebbing, he tried to kick, rather than run the ball back at us. The kick was gathered by Oli, and resulted in a maul, from which, Gs gained another 15m. The ball emerged from the back of the maul and found its way to Zac, who ran down the Darts wing, chipping and chasing over the Darts heads onto his own ball and touching down under the posts for the try of the match. Tye converted and 5 minutes into the half the score stood at 5-38. Gs now in their stride, the boys continued to apply pressure, being eventually rewarded with a Ben M try, converted by Tye in the 13th minute and another Ben M try 5 minutes later in the corner leaving a tough conversion, which was again slotted by Tye. 5-52! Shortly after the restart came Gs last try. Ben D making another good run, setting up a ruck just inside the Darts half. Connor gathered the ball from the back of the ruck, passing through the line to Josh, who touched down under the posts gifting Tye his 7th conversion. The referee blew the final whistle a few minutes early with the final score 5-59.

It was such a team performance, that it is genuinely hard to single any players out, however, Stan, Scott, Sam, Josh C and the two Jacobs did a fantastic job in the scrums, mauls and some of the rucks. All 3 Bens were excellent, Oli and Ned's tackles and decision making were faultless. Zac's game was selfless and intelligent....In fact, you were all great! Sharon Outram even turned up to watch!
