Gs show grit against Southend, but the travel north doesn't go well

Gs kicked off and got proceedings under way. Southend gathered well and took the ball into contact. A few good rucks and counter rucks from both teams ensued, resulting in a penalty to G's which was kicked to touch. From the line out the first scrum fell to Gs. With the tight 5 working well the scrum was won which gave Ned the opportunity to slice through the Southend defence to make the break and off-load to Zach for him to score under the posts. Tye stepped up for the conversion that was successful. This was to be the only time Gs managed to get over the Southend try line for the remainder of the afternoon.

Southend restarted the game with a good catch and set by Nathan, with the ruck resulting in a penalty to Gs. Gs decided to have a run and a turnover in the contact results in a Southend try out wide.

From the restart Southend knocked on. Gs won their scum comfortably, but again the ball was lost in the contact. Good hands and rucking from Southend resulted in another try, but this time under the posts.

The remainder of the second half saw both teams rucking well and showing some good running rugby. Gs continued to scrum well, but could not break the Southend defence. Southend's continued attacks resulted in a further 5 tries to end the half with a score line in Southend's favour at 39-7.

The second half kick off from Southend was gathered by Nathan and taken in well. Great rucking again from Gs saw the ball lost in contact once again. From a 5m scrum Southend's No8 picked up and drove over the line for another try.

Good hands and deep runners from Southend kept the Gs busy and another try followed.

Gs never let their heads drop and after some good hands, great rucking, strong running and several penalties Gs found themselves within sniffing distance of the try line, but couldn't turn the pressure into points. From the Gs own line out the ball was lost and Southend cleared their line. The returned pressure from Southend resulted in a scrum 5m out from the Gs try line. Another try followed.

A further try from Southend followed, which was to be the last score of the day. However, with only a couple of minutes to play Gs continued to throw everything at Southend. From the restart Southend ran at Gs and then went for the chip and chase. Tye gathered well and ran from the Gs 22, skipping past tacklers and almost made it to the Southend 22. With an infringement at the ruck the game came to a close with the final score at 61-7.

Not their finest moment, but the boys played well and never dropped their heads. The Gs gave it their all, but the boys from Essex proved too much!!
