Despite a try a piece in the early stages the game really sparked into life when Gravesend replacement Nirees Kanaharajah was sent off following a head on head collision with the scores at 10-7 to Gravesend.
Where Gravesend had been a bit guilty of wasting possession in the first 20minutes this incident gave the much larger Dagenham pack every incentive. When Gravesend scored their second try Dagenham immediately responded much to the delight of the travelling support.
A couple of Josh Smith tries put daylight between the teams only for a comedy moment allowed the visitors to steal the ball and give Dagenham hope once more.
The heat and superior fitness of Gravesend started to show which allowed Chris Brady a couple of break away tries and a fine flowing move from the forwards allowed skipper Matt Hewitt to scamper home. A final score for Dagenham was just reward for their efforts but seven tries for the home side while playing most of the game with a man down means it is they that progress on to the second round.
Next week sees Gravesend travel to Fullerians in Watford for Round 2.
