An early penalty went Gravesend's way, with a try coming through Jamie Fautley with just 5 minutes on
the clock. Rhys Betts converted to make it a 7-0 lead before supporters were even halfway through the
first beer.
Old Colfeians had most of the possession but Gravesend were looking good with their set pieces. After
15 minutes, Old Colfeians had levelled the score through some skilled play of their own.
Gravesend’s lineout looked good and some pace from the backs put them in an excellent position.
Sadly, Rhys Betts suffered a nasty injury and after a five minute break was stretchered off and taken
away to hospital. We all wish him a speedy recovery.
Play restarted with a scrum to Gravesend and it took Jon Luck less than a minute to cross the line. With
our regular kicker waiting for an x-ray, it was down to Josh Smith to add the extras, taking the score back
to a 7-point lead at 14-7.
Old Colfeians answered back with a try in the corner which was noisily celebrated, but their kicker
couldn’t add the extras and they still trailed 14-12.
Gravesend’s set play continued to look good but loose passes frustrated them, and those watching, with
the scores so tight.
With Chris Shorter needing some attention to his calf, half time came with the home side holding a
narrow lead.
The second half started with Ben Hope making an exciting run up the wing but being tackled before he
could make it count. A yellow card for Ned Warren resulted in Old Colfeians using the penalty to go for
the posts and add three points, giving them the most slender of leads at 14-15.
Ten minutes later and, clearly feeling a little left out, Old Colfeians earned themselves a yellow card
giving Gravesend the opportunity to kick for touch and put themselves in an excellent position.
A drive over the line resulted in Nathan Fourie scoring with just over ten minutes left and the conversion
made it 21-15.
That didn't put Old Colfeians off though, and with a renewed energy they went over just a few minutes
later. They didn’t make the conversion though and the last few minutes of the match were tense.
An increased tempo and sense of urgency made Gravesend look the better side at the very end and the
final score was a nervy but well deserved win 21-20.
