Too many penalties, too many missed tackles - Report Jeff Moorey

With a record crowd of away supporters on show and knowing that the team needed support, there was hope of flowing rugby. The referee put paid to that with the whistle constantly being aired. All through the game, the majority of the penalties were from infringements around the tackle area for either holding on or hands in the ruck. Neither team learning that this was going to be the hot potato.
During the first ten minutes, Gravesend showed great enthusiasm with ball in hand going through phases and gaining metres. This led to a penalty after a line out drive to the Bracknell 10 metre line. Although missing the kick, Gravesend continued to press forward with further penalty kicks to touch allowing Geoff Marshall to run through tackles and press forward.
Good possession and management allowed for runs from Tom Goss and Gary Gray.
On 12 minutes, with Bracknell visiting the Gravesend half meaningfully for the first time, they were awarded a penalty, for not rolling away on the 22. A quick tap from Liam Hemming with Gravesend not set allowed the ball to get to Joe Price who touched down through two empty tackles. Conversion scored. 7-0
The rest of the half followed with both teams not learning to roll away or keeping hands in. This led to each team scoring penalties, 13-3.
Then came a mad 15 minutes, two unanswered tries and conversions, missed tackles and what appeared to be a collective yellow card for Robin Foulet, again holding on. Half time 27-3
The second half copied the first half with Bracknell capitalising on yet another penalty in the 48th minute, the prop Harry Challenor driving over from the line out. Hemming once again kicking well. 34-3. With both teams using all of their substitutes Gravesend were forced to juggle positions as once again, hands in the ruck and Tom Shields was shown Yellow. 62 minutes gone. Credit must go the team for the next 18 minutes of effort and play. Playing with pride and surviving playing with 14 on the pitch. Once Tom returned Gravesend kept pressing and with the ref allowing for 5 phases of rugby, entry to the Bracknell half continued. With 80 minutes on the clock, Gravesend moved the ball away from the tackle area and with swift passing, Gary Gray touched the ball down in the corner. A Jacob Berthelson Conversion was followed by the final whistle. 34-10
The players know they missed a number of tackles and gave away too many penalties. This can be rectified.
A battle for survival is now on, wins are now crucial. Confidence is the key here, each game witnessed so far shows glimpses of what this team is really capable of. A game of quality rugby is what the large crowds at home have been used to and expect. The team need our support home and away through these turbulent weeks.

Come on you Gees !
