The first home league fixture of the season saw Gravesend 1st XV take on Crowborough in front of a strong crowd enjoying the lovely weather

A moment’s silence was held to remember those lost since the last home league game in February 2020, in particular for Ian (Tarzan) Turnnidge and Dan Sullivan who were both Vice Presidents of GRFC.
The first penalty and period of possession went to Crowborough, but they turned the ball over and Gravesend put the pressure straight back onto their opposition. Rhys Betts used that to his advantage to score the first try and get the first points on the board. For a while afterwards there were lots of little breaks from Gravesend but Crowborough managed to hold off the attack each time. Eventually, Zac Lewis managed to cross the line and take the hosts into half time with a 10-0 lead.
It only took four minutes of the second half, and a lineout opportunity for Gravesend to score again. Jamie Forsyth, with great awareness on the pitch, called for quick ball from Terry Papworth and then popped the ball back to the hooker to take the ball over the line. George Bruce took over kicking duties to add the extras: 17-0.
Gravesend were never more than ten minutes away from their next try, though, and scores from Matt Brady and Betts (again) took Gravesend’s points tally to an unanswered 29. Following a red card for Crowborough’s number 12, Gravesend really took control, looking strong in the scrum and with play through the hands. A superb kick up field was collected and offloaded to Chris Brady, who ran in for the try to make the score 36-0 with approximately 20 minutes left.
That twenty minute period was plenty of time for Gravesend to pile the pressure on Crowborough, although it seemed for a time that they were going to be unable to finish a move. But then Betts and Matt Hewitt decided the show wasn’t over yet and both scored tries inside the final ten minutes. With both tries converted, the final score was a convincing 50-0 to Gravesend.
Captain Terry Papworth, speaking after the game, said it had been a big game for the club and that led to a good performance, in which everyone worked hard and played their part. He said it’s good to be back, with particular stand out performances from Connor Murphy, Chris Brady and Ashley Frampton. “Onwards and Upwards!”
