Looking to avenge their scrappy 17-0 away loss to the Old G's,the Gannets again took to the field with a much changed line up due to call ups to the 3's,injury and work commitments.
The Old G's took the game to the Gannets from the kick off with driving mauls from their big pack and some strong running from their number 8.
On 14 minutes a penalty was awarded to the Old G's in front of the posts, the ball rebounding off the upright and taking a horrendous bounce straight into the arms of the Old G's 12 who stepped inside to score a try which was converted.
This spurred the home side on with some excellent breaks by Ian Shuttlewood and a non hungover John Sargent which both ended with spilled balls when trys looked certain.
The Gannets went further behind to a 35th min penalty before a suspected broken finger ended Mike Murrays game (he is no doubt still in A&E at Death Valley as I type this).Russ Turley came on to replace him in what was his first game of rugby, ever.
The G's started the second half strongly with the scrum and lineout finally clicking and some strong running from the backs. However,an intercepted pass from the Old G's inside centre saw him run half the length of the field with uncharacteristic speed,to score under the posts.
But back the Gannets came with James Kurszewski taking the ball just inside the opposition half, beating 4 players and touching down by the posts, the final whistle coming soon after.
Overall while it's always disappointing to lose, here are the positives and highlights from todays game:
Russ Turley. Was this really the first time he's played rugby?! Strong running, tackling and scrummaging.Superb debut.
James Kurszewski.Electric pace always had the oppo on the back foot.Fully deserved a try in only his third game ever.
John Sargents near length of the field run which only just fell short of the try line.If he was hungover,he would of scored.
Vidmantus Petrauskus the crazy Lithuanian with a knackered hamstring.Played on despite the pain and running style was a sight to behold.
Martin Welsh.First time throwing in at the lineout.Initially was a bit wayward,as you might expect, but nailed it second half.
Martin Welsh.Receiving the kick off, dropping the ball, falling over the ball.Class.
Until next time,Come on you Geeeeeeeeees!
