Gs scraped 15 players but managed to take the honours

Gs scraped 15 players but managed to take the honours in very entertaining game against a determined Shooters Hill.

What with Half-Term depriving both sides of a number of players we were just glad to get the game on in blustery conditions this Sunday.

Gs were quickly into their stride and set about starting this game in the way they did at Stanford last week. First to the breakdown and looking to spin the ball out wide at every opportunity Gs made the most of the pace in the back line to release Johnny H on no less that three occasions. Each time a combination of good lines of running, pace and not inconsiderable strength saw Johnny outpace the Shooters Hill defence and score under the posts. George B slotted all three conversions to give the Gs a comfortable 21-0 lead.

To say it was one way traffic would be an exaggeration as Shooters Hill were in this game all the way and made very good use of a larger pack to pick and drive round the fringes time and again. Their undoing on a number of occasions was giving away a number of penalties from which Gs took field position and made good yards. That said Shooters Hill kept on playing to their strengths and it was little surprise to see them go over under the posts just before half time.

What with the lack of subs there were no changes at half time and Gs knew that the next score may well may the difference given that Shooters Hill had finished the hal on a high. Gs were once again the architects of their own undoing when 5 minutes into the second half the Hill No. 8 picked the ball up (which he did time and again) and tore round the blind side without as much as a touch to score out wide (21-12).

This did seem to wake the Gs forwards and after taking their foot off the pedal started to up the pace. Ball was still in good supply and it was no surprise that the ever impressive Samraj crashed over for yet another score. The convesrion from out wide was stroked over to take the score to 28-12.

As Shoots tired the penalty count increased and from one quick penalty which saw the visitors marched back 10, Ben Woodbine took the ball and was held up short of the line. The forwards were there in numbers and it was from the back of a ruck that Matt P picked the ball up and dived over the line for his first try for the club. The conversion was wide and with no further scores the match finished 33-12.

Special mention must go to the 15 lads who turned up today, many played out of position yet nobody complained and all got on with the job. George Bo had one of his best games of the season ably supported by Luke T and Cormac who also put in a good shift. It was good to see the boys enjoy themselves today and a fine win against a very spirited and sporting Shooters Hill side.
