Gs U15 get off to a fine start away at Aylesford

Gs U15 made the short trip to Aylesford on Sunday to play a warm up game ahead of the Kent Cup starting next week.

Having lost one or two players over the summer and a last minute injury to Josh W-F Gs were forced in to a re-shuffle with Chris B moving from the back-row to centre. In a game of 3 x 20min periods the first 10mins were evenly contested with both sides re-cycling the ball well at the breakdown.

The first decisive move of the game came Gs way as the hastily arranged back line found space and good hands saw G cross over out wide. With the conversion kicked Gs were 7-0 up and expecting the Aylesford onslaught. That onslaught never really came as time and again the Bulls individuality was met with robust tackling from the Gs forwards. At the breakdown Gs rucked particularly well and Tyler O, who had arguably his best game at scrum-half, was quick to distribute to the backs who had plenty of space to run into. Following a penalty in mid-field, Sam R took the ball on and from another good phase Levon B picked up to drive over. (12-0)

The second period started in similar fashion for Gs where good distribution saw Gs dominate field position. George Br showed a good turn of pace and having handed off the Bulls fly-half was then left with the prospect of running half the length of the pitch to score in the corner. The effort all proved too much and the resulting conversion was kicked wide.

Aylesford got back into the game when they finally used their backs to the full and found plenty of pace to score out wide. It looked like Aylesford were getting on top and a period of pressure close to the Gs line was resisted. Gs finally got the ball and drove upfield through a number of phases. From the last of these Tyler O gathered the ball and made a sprint for the line but was pulled down just short. Gs collected from the scrum and again Chris B was on hand in the backs to score. (24-5).

In the final period Gs were determined not to let their grip on the game go and George Br kicked field position at every opportunity. Ben W and George Bo had great games in the back row and kept a steady supply of ball for the backs. On one occasion Callum M cut a decisive line to crash through and score (due reward for some immense tackling) . Aylesford came back again to score and keep the game alive. (31-10)

Levon barged his way over to score his second of the game and as the game neared its conclusion a decisive kick through by George Br saw Chris B and Lewis J outsprint the Bulls defence with Lewis calmly collecting an falling over the line (41-10). Aylesford came back again and scored probably their best try of the game but with the conversion kicked the 41-17 scoreline was probably a fair result and just rewards for a great team performance.

Special mention to Denholm on his debut for the U15s - some great lines and huge strength at the scrum shows a promising rugby career ahead of him.
