This was a game that had parents coaches and injured players delighted with what was a ding dong battle between two teams that did not give an inch.
Gravesends recycling was a joy to watch for the first 20 minutes of the game with Beckenham hardly touching the ball, however Beckenhams defence was outstanding and with Gravesend tiring they were themselves unlucky not to break the deadlock ending the half camped in the Gravesend 22.
The tension continued into the 2nd half with gaps starting to appear but last ditch tackles from both sides stopping a score. Gravesend's movement was eventually rewarded with a try by Owen Webster. Beckenham came back strongly and were unlucky not equalise when one of their players ran over the dead ball line before touching down. A momentary lapse in defence first out wide and then from a penalty allowed Beckenham to go over for the equalising score.
Gravesend finished strongly with No 8 Owen Hinks picking up and distributing the ball having outflanked the opposition back row and committing their fly half, however a knock on stopped an almost certain score. Patrick Murray then found some renewed energy and was just held up to deny him the winning score.
So the first half of the season ends on a high as this was a game that would have seen Gravesend leak 3 or 4 tries 4 or 5 weeks ago.
The coaching team are proud of the progress the squad are making and that Gravesend fighting spirit is starting to get into the players heads and mentality. Go G'S.
